Your product team has made the export button easier to find. Customers may save several seconds a week. This is useful work, which creates an immediate problem for marketing: usefulness rarely requires a launch film.

With careful positioning, however, a small interface improvement can become a defining moment in the relationship between people, possibility and whichever file format your software supports.

Remove the unhelpful specifics

Do not lead with the button. Lead with a belief. “We believe work should flow” is effective because it sounds purposeful while excluding the sort of detail that might allow someone to assess what has changed.

Give the update a name that would also suit a luxury housing development. Horizon. Elevate. Meridian. Then refer to the old location of the button as a legacy experience, despite having promoted it enthusiastically last quarter.

Create suspense around availability

Publish a countdown. Customers who need to export a spreadsheet should first have the opportunity to wonder what is coming. Send an email saying “Everything changes Thursday”. On Thursday, send another saying that the rollout will occur gradually over the next several weeks.

Offer a waiting list for early access. This turns a feature customers already pay for into an opportunity they can apply to receive. Describe the response as demand, even if most people are simply asking where the button went.

Give the founder a horizon to look towards

Film the founder walking through an empty office at sunrise. Nobody should be using the product in the film; usage introduces screen recordings, and screen recordings introduce scale.

The voiceover should describe a journey. Cut to a mountain, a train and a person opening curtains. These images communicate progress without requiring you to show the previous and current positions of the export button side by side.

Report the impact correctly

Track impressions, applause and the number of employees who shared the announcement after receiving a reminder. Avoid measuring whether customers exported more successfully. That would confuse the product outcome with the campaign outcome.

When someone points out that this was a minor update, agree warmly. Explain that the smallest changes can make the biggest difference. Then ask the finance team to approve the invoice for the helicopter footage.
